Virat Kohli showed his superstitious side by swapping the bails – as Stuart Broad did during the Ashes 2023 – during South Africa’s first innings in the Centurion Test. And it worked like a charm for India as just after that Jasprit Bumrah picked two wickets to bring India back in the game.
Dean Elgar and Tony de Zorzi were building a big second-wicket partnership on either side of Lunch on Day 2. They were helped by some disappointing bowling from Shadul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna, who is on debut. Both the inexperienced pacers offered plenty of full balls that the two left-handed batters drove and flicked for boundaries in their partnership of 93 (153).
Rohit Sharma brought back Jasprit Bumrah, but for a while, even Bumrah failed to break the stand. Then, during the change of overs, Virat Kohli walked to the striker end’s stumps and swapped the bails.
This was exactly how England pacer Stuart Broad brought fortunes for England in the 5th Ashes Test earlier this year. Then, Broad took two wickets to seal England’s win in the 5th Test. And here also, soon after Virat Kohli swapped the bails, Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets – Tony de Zorzi was caught at third slip by Jaiswal before Keegan Petersen inside-edged a length delivery onto his stumps.
These two scalps brought India back into the game as South Africa went from 104/1 to 113/3 in reply to India’s 245 in the first innings.
