IPL: 5 Players Who Turned Out To Be One-Season Wonders

Yash BajajBy Yash Bajaj03/12/2019Updated:08/02/2023No Comments2 Mins Read

IPL is arguably the most competitive twenty20 league in the world. The standards of this league rise every year, with one mind-blowing performance over the other. When it is IPL neither the players nor the fans settle for mediocre, everyone wants the game to be at a superlative level.

But what if these performances aren’t consistent? What if all the glitter fades away? With so much inflow of talent, some names just suddenly appear one season only to get sidelined in the future. Following is a list of the one-season heroes of the league:

1) Paul Valathy:

What an innings of 120 runs off just 63 balls this Mumbai batsman had executed. His knock for Punjab against Chennai in 2011 is known for its fluent strokes and persistence. However, after falling under the spotlight for some time this Kings XI Punjab opener disappeared. He scored only 30 runs in the next 6 games.

2) Manvinder Bisla:

The highlight of Bisla’s IPL stint was an 89 run knock for KKR in the 2012 finals where he knocked off CSK one-handedly. The next season he only played a couple of games for RCB and then never floated again. Manvinder tried his luck in other leagues but came back empty-handed.

3) Saurabh Tiwary

Also known as a left-handed M.S.Dhoni, Saurabh scored 419 runs in 16 games for Mumbai Indians in 2010. His hard-hitting abilities saw him become the emerging player of the tournament. This Jharkhand batsman had an unorthodox technique and also made a decent wicketkeeper but after the 2010 season, his form kept fading.

Saurabh Tiwary has been a regular face at the IPL but couldn’t emulate the wonders of 2010 again.

4) Swapnil Asnodkar

Swapnil was one of the building blocks of the Rajasthan Royals’ 2008 campaign. His contributions to the team’s title victory included 311 runs in 9 matches. With the support of Shane Warne, this Goa batsman created wonders that year.

However, in the following seasons, Swapnil disappeared from the IPL circuit. He played a few List A games for Goa then.

5) Rahul Sharma:

The Deccan Chargers leg-spinner made headlines by claiming Sachin Tendulkar’s wicket in 2011. His debut season saw him pick 14 wickets in 13 matches. The tall leggie was also called up to represent the national side where he played four ODI’s and two T20’s. His career graph fell with a positive narcotics test.
