IPL 2023: 3 Players Who Can Replace Kyle Jamieson In CSK Squad

Ahead of the IPL 2023, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a major blow as they have lost New Zealand seamer Kyle Jamieson to a back stress fracture injury.

The lanky seamer was supposed to make his comeback in the Test series against England, but had to be pulled out on the eve of the series opener and is facing another extended period out of the game following a recurrence of his back stress fracture.

The 28-year-old had missed the last 8 months of international cricket due to a back injury that he’d picked up in June, and is set to be out for at least three to four months after undergoing back surgery this week.

Kyle Jamieson was brought by CSK in the IPL 2023 auction for his base price of INR 1 crore. He played in the IPL 2021 for RCB, when he was bought for INR 15 crore. The Kiwi seamer took 9 wickets in 9 IPL games. He then withdrew from IPL 2022 due to workload management.

CSK had brought him to have backups in their pace attack, and he was unlikely to play in their home matches, but could have been useful in seam-friendly conditions like in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Jaipur.

Here are 3 replacements CSK might seek for Kyle Jamieson:

Sri Lanka’s white-ball captain Dasun Shanaka going unsold in the auction was a surprise already for everyone. Now, though, the all-rounder can be picked up by CSK as Jamieson’s replacement.

After going unsold in the auction, Shanaka showed his prowess as a finisher. Facing his brunt were the Indian bowlers: in the 3 T20Is in January against India, in India, Shanaka hammered 124 runs at a belligerent strike rate of 187!

Last year, Shanaka led Sri Lanka to the Asia Cup title as well. In 2022, he scored 497 T20I runs at a strike rate of 135. As a seamer, Shanak is capable to giving 1-2 good overs in T20I cricket. His powerful lower-order hitting and his seam-bowling option, plus a clam mind, makes Shanaka a utility T20 player.

Gerald Coetzee

Gerald Coetzee has become a fan-favorite among CSK fans after a sizzling season of the SA20 for Johannesburg Super Kings, CSK’s sister franchise in the SA20 tournament, where JSK reached the semi-finals.

With an action akin to Dale Steyn, and having high pace, 22-year-old Gerald Coetzee snapped up 17 wickets in 9 SA20 matches – the highest for his team and third-highest in the tournament – at an average of only 13. Coetzee can also tonk the ball a long distance.

Having gone unsold in the auction, this gives CSK a great opportunity to rope in Coetzee at a low price.

Riley Meredith

Riley Meredith is one of the fastest pacers in the world. He was with Punjab in 2021 and Mumbai in 2022, picking up 12 wickets in 13 IPL matches, before going unsold in the IPL 2023 auction.

Meredith, though, seems to have gotten better in recent months: in the BBL 2022/23 season, the Hobart Hurricanes speedster picked 21 wickets in 14 matches.

Riley Meredith has got pace and has got a potent outswinger and can bounce batters out. This makes him a good candidate for CSK to rope him in as Jamieson’s replacement.
