2 Reasons Why Delhi Capitals Will Come Last In IPL 2023

Delhi Capitals

All the 10 teams have played in at least 3 matches each, and Delhi Capitals, who have played 4 matches, are the only team without a win so far in the IPL 2023.

Their latest loss came in a last-ball thriller at home, against Mumbai Indians, who recorded their first win of the season after two embarrassing losses.

The Ricky Ponting-coached side hasn’t been up to the mark in both the departments, and consequently, are languishing at the bottom of the table, and it could be that way as well by the end of the season.

Here are 2 major factors why Delhi Capitals might end up at the bottom of the table by the end of IPL 2023:

Out of form batters not able to support David Warner

David Warner, Delhi Capitals

Currently, David Warner, the Delhi Capitals captain, is the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 209 runs at an average of 54 and 3 fifties in 4 matches. But his runs have come at a lowly strike rate of 114. This is because of the twin factors: his own struggles to find the boundary – Warner hasn’t hit a six yet, having faced 182 balls – and also for the fact that he’s rarely gotten support from the other end. The likes of Prithvi Shaw, Rilee Rossow, Manish Pandey, and Rovman Powell have been out of touch in this tournament while Axar Patel played the best knock by a DC batter in this tournament yet vs Mumbai.

Mitchell Marsh, after playing the first 2 games, was back home for his wedding and will miss a week of the tournament and is injury-prone already.

Delhi’s batting, in the absence of Pant and with Warner not finding the fence regularly, has been a major letdown.

Poor tactics

Delhi Capitals’ tactic from the coaching staff and their captain also have been really ordinary. For example, DC sent in Rovman Powell with half of the inning left, and with Piyush Chawla still having a couple of overs despite everyone knowing Powell’s struggles against leg spin. Chawla dismissed Powell duly. They instead should have, as many would agree, promoted the in-form Axar Patel, who has been in superb batting nick over the past year.

Dropping Rossow, who is a serial T20 match-winner on his day, is another questionable call, especially when Marsh is unavailable.

On the field, Warner also has been a letdown with his bowling changes and some of the field placements; the bowlers, too, haven’t done well to not bowl according to the field.

Their campaign so far has shown all signs that the Delhi Capitals are likely to end up at the last position on the points table.
