Virender Sehwag
Opener Virender Sehwag, who was dismissed for a duck by Lasith Malinga in the 2011 WC final, retired from international cricket and the IPL in 2015. After retirement, Sehwag became the coach of Punjab in the IPL. He then switched to commentary full-time and now gives his analysis on Cricbuzz.
Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar scored 18 runs in 14 balls in the 2011 WC final. He retired from international and IPL cricket in 2013.
Tendulkar appeared rarely in the commentary box and remains more involved in his businesses, including a sports management company and a chain of restaurants. Tendulkar regularly endorses brands, and still remains the richest cricketer.
Gautam Gambhir
One of the heroes of India’s 2011 WC Final win is Gautam Gambhir, who scored 97 runs. He last played for India in 2016. Gambhir led KKR to two IPL titles and left KKR in 2017. He joined Delhi in 2018 and left them after a short stint and became a full-time commentator. Gambhir is currently the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants since 2022 and also does commentary.
Virat Kohli
Kohli, who played a vital knock of 35 runs in the 2011 final, became the ICC Cricketer of the Decade. He is one of India’s most successful captains. With the bat, he’s in line to break Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries. Aged 34, Kohli is in the last phase of his career. The World Cup 2023 is likely to be his ODI swansong.
MS Dhoni
India captain MS Dhoni was the Player of the Match in the 2011 WC Final for his 91* in 79 balls. Dhoni played international cricket till the 2019 World Cup. He then retired from international cricket in 2020, but continues to play in the IPL. He recently led CSK to their 5th IPL trophy. He’s confirmed to return to play in IPL 2024 as well.
Yuvraj Singh
The Man of the Tournament in the 2011 WC, in the final, Yuvraj scored 21* runs and took two wickets. After that, Yuvraj left cricket for the treatment of his cancer but made a bumper comeback. He played international cricket till 2017 and he played in the IPL till 2019. Yuvraj now spends plenty of time with his family, he became a father in 2022.
Suresh Raina
Although Raina didn’t get to bat in the 2011 WC Final, he made important contributions in the semi-final and the quarter-final. Raina was an important part of the white-ball team till 2015 and then was in and out for the next three years.
He last played in the IPL in 2021 and retired from the IPL after going unsold in the 2022 auction. He is now a full-time commentator.
Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh took the wicket of T Dilshan in the 2011 WC Final. After the 2011 final, Harbhajan’s form dropped and he was replaced as the first-choice off-spinner by R Ashwin. His last game for India was in 2016 and his last IPL game was in 2021. Like Raina, Harbhajan is also a full-time commentator now.
Zaheer Khan
Zaheer Khan was the joint-leading wicket-taker in the 2011 WC, and he took two wickets in the final. After that, Zaheer suffered multiple injuries. His last international match was in 2014 and his last IPL game was in 2017. Zaheer now is a full-time commentator as well.
Munaf Patel
Munaf Patel, who was a key part of India’s 2011 WC trophy win, went into almost oblivion and away from the limelight after that. He played a few matches after the 2011 WC and his last IPL match was in 2017. It is learned that he is now enjoying retirement with his family in Gujarat.
S Sreesanth
Sreesanth, who appeared in the 2011 WC Final, it became the last ODI for the Kerala fast bowler; his last Test came on the 2011 England tour before he was dropped from all three formats. His life changed when he got involved in the 2013 spot-fixing scandal and was banned.
His ban was lifted later on and he made a reappearance in the 2021/22 domestic season, after which he announced his retirement from cricket in India. He played in the 2022 Abu Dhabi T10 league. He recently played in the US Masters T10.
