Former Indian cricketer and World Cup hero Gautam Gambhir came down heavily on the Pakistan captain Babar Azam after his side lost the game against South Africa during Match number 26th of ODI World Cup 2023 on Friday, October 27 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
Babar Has Been Going Through A Poor Form
The Pakistani cricket team started their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign on a winning note, defeating the Netherlands in the tournament opener and following it up with a second consecutive win over Sri Lanka. However, nothing has been going in the right direction for the team ever since then. The Men in Green has suffered only disappointment in the tournament.
After opting to bat first, Pakistan was bundled out for 270 in 46.4 overs while South Africa chased down the target in 47.2 overs and thrillingly won the game by one wicket. Pakistan captain Babar Azam was criticized badly for his slow knock. Babar scored 50 (65) against South Africa which was also his third half-century of the tournament so far. He also scored 74 (92) in the previous game against Afghanistan and 50 (58) against India in the third fixture.
Notably, the criticism against Babar Azam has grown lately, with greater scrutiny against his batting as well. In six games so far, Babar has aggregated only 207 runs and has failed to live up to the expectations in key matches against India, Australia, and South Africa.
Gautam Gambhir Called Babar Azam ‘Overrated’
Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir heavily criticized Babar saying that the Pakistan skipper hasn’t played any impactful knock in his career and his records and rankings are overrated. Speaking on Star Sports, Gautam Gambhir said:
“Babar Azam hasn’t played any impactful inning. Records and rankings are overrated. The real No.1 is the one who wins matches,”
