Rohit Sharma has been named the captain of the ICC Team of the Tournament for the World Cup 2023. Rohit Sharma led India to 10 straight victories before the team faltered in the final with serial ICC trophy winners Australia clinching their 6th ODI World Cup trophy.
Australia defeated India in the World Cup 2023 final, spoiling the part of the over 100,000 Indian fans that had assembled at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and the over a billion fans across the world.
After a brilliant bowling and fielding show from the Aussies, Travis Head’s thunderous century took Australia over the line in their chase of the target of 241 runs.
World Cup 2023: ICC Team of the Tournament – Rohit Sharma named captain; 6 Indians picked
On Monday morning, the ICC revealed their team of the tournament of the World Cup 2023. 6 Indians made the list. Only 2 Australians were picked, even as they ended the tournament with the trophy.
Virat Kohli, Rohit, and Quinton de Kock finished as the top three run-scorers in the tournament, and all made it into the ICC’s team.
Kohli had a record-breaking tournament with 765 runs, 3 centuries and 6 fifties. Rohit Sharma smashed 597 runs at a strike rate of 125 while de Kock amassed 594 runs at an average of 59.
For the middle-order spot, the ICC picked Daryl Mitchell and KL Rahul as the wicket-keeper. Mitchell scored 552 runs which included twin centuries against India. Rahul scored 452 runs at an average of 75 – the third-best for any batsman in the tournament.
Glenn Maxwell and Ravindra Jadeja are the two all-rounders in the side. Maxwell walloped 400 runs at a strike rate of 150! He also picked 6 wickets, including Rohit Sharma in the final. Jadeja finished with 16 wickets in the tournament and played a couple of handy knocks with the bat.
Coming to the bowlers, there was little debate in this. Shami ended as the leading wicket-taker with 24 wickets, followed by Zampa (23), Madushanka (21) and Bumrah (20). Gerald Coetzee, who picked 20 wickets, is the 12th man.
