The Indian cricket team made a heartbreaking start to their innings in their first match of the World Cup 2023, which was against Australia. The Indian bowlers put up a stellar show at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, where they bundled out the visitors for just 199 runs.
It was expected that the Indian cricket team would chase the target easily but that didn’t happen as Australian bowlers were all over them.
Soon, India lost Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer for a duck. Mitchell Starc drew the first blood as he removed Ishan Kishan with a peach of delivery for a golden duck. Ishan attempted to play the full-wide delivery for on drive but he got the edge that was caught by Cameron Green in the slips.
In the very next over, Josh Hazlewood trapped the Indian captain Rohit Sharma for LBW. He bowled from a fuller length that cut in sharply after pitching. The ball was in front of the middle and the batter was termed out for a duck. India found itself in some deep trouble when Josh Hazlewood removed Shreyas Iyer as well.
Virat Kohli And KL Rahul Played Brilliant Knocks
The Men in Blue were at 2-3 when Virat Kohli and KL Rahul saved India from embarrassment. The Indian run machine Virat Kohli played a crucial knock for the Indian cricket team. He stood tall for the team when the top order collapsed badly. He played a match-winning knock of 116-ball 85, having shared a century partnership stand with KL Rahul.
Kohli came to the middle after India lost opener Ishan Kishan in the first opener. Soon after Rohit’s dismissal, the onus was on Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. The duo gave an exhibition of resistance and determination thereafter. Virat played every shot cautiously, having scored just 6 fours in his knock. He scored 71 runs off singles and doubles. Notably, Kohli slammed his ninth World Cup 50+ score.
On the other hand, KL Rahul played a sensational knock for the team as he accompanied Virat in helping India make a comeback. KL Rahul played a stunning knock of 97 runs off 115 balls, smashing 8 fours and 2 sixes.
Riding on the stellar knocks of Virat and KL Rahul and a finishing touch by Hardik Pandya (11 runs off 8 balls), the Indian cricket team defeated Australia by 6 wickets.
