Centuries from debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Rohit Sharma, the two India openers, helped the visitors script a massive win by an innings and 141 runs over the West Indies in Dominica, helping India take a 1-0 lead in the 2-Test series.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who came into his debut Test match with a batting average of close to 80 in 15 first-class matches, slammed a terrific century. He became the 17th Indian batsman and only the third Indian opener to hit a century on debut Test. Rohit Sharma notched up his 10th Test century and his second outside Asia.
Rohit scored 103 runs while Yashasvi Jaiswal recorded a mammoth score of 171 runs on his debut and bagged the Player of the Match award. Courtesy of their three-figure scores in Dominica, both the batters saw a rise in their Test ranking in the latest updated ICC Batter Men’s Test ranking.
Rohit Sharma moved up to three places in the batsmen’s Test ranking to return in the top 10, placed at the 10th place now. He’s the highest-ranked Indian batsman in Test at the moment, with Rishabh Pant at 11th spot and Virat Kohli, who raised a fifty in Dominia, stationed at the 14th position.
Yashasvi Jaiswal entered the batting rankings in 73rd place following his magnificent innings of 171.
R Ashwin further consolidated his position at the top of the bowler’s rankings. Ashwin took 5 wickets in the first innings and 7 wickets in the second innings to finish with 12 in the game. He has now distanced himself more from the second-ranked bowler Pat Cummins. Ashwin has 884 rating points while Cummins has 828 rating.
Ravindra Jadeja took 5 wickets in all in the match and moved up three places to number 7, pushing down Robinson, Lyon, and Bumrah.
Four others teams – England, Australia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka – are also involved in Test matches this week and expect some changes later on as well in the ICC Test player rankings.
