Who Is Tanveer Sangha? Australia’s Surprise Pick For World Cup 2023

All That You Need To Know About Tanveer Sangha

Cricket Australia recently unveiled their squad for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Scheduled to kick off in India on October 5, the list contains some expected names and a few shocks. Notably, Tanveer Sangha, a 21-year-old leg-spinner, emerges as the most surprising inclusion in the 18-member ensemble.

Interestingly, Tanveer Sangha has his familial roots in Jalandhar, India. This young prodigy marked his presence early on. Specifically, in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup, he clinched the title of Australia’s top wicket-taker. There, he amassed an impressive 15 wickets in just six games. This tally included two sets of four-wicket hauls and a memorable five-wicket feat.

Furthermore, Tanveer Sangha’s family background paints an inspirational story. His father, Jog Sangha, shifted to Australia from Rahimpur near Jalandhar in 1997. Now, he earns his livelihood as a Sydney cab driver. On the other hand, his mother, Upneet, works diligently as an accountant.

But as we applaud Tanveer Sangha’s achievements, another significant detail stands out. The Australian selection committee excluded Marnus Labuschagne, a renowned batter. Consequently, this paved the way for the Indian-origin spinner’s inclusion.

Moreover, Sangha isn’t unfamiliar with national recognition. His remarkable first-class debut in 2020 earned him a spot in Australia’s T20I series against New Zealand in 2021. Thus, he joined the ranks of Gurinder Sandhu, Stuart Clark, and Bransby Cooper. These players also represent the few of Indian origin to don the Australian jersey. Yet, it’s essential to note that Sangha hasn’t played for the national team, despite his call-up.

Initially, Sangha didn’t start as a spinner. In fact, his cricketing journey began as a fast bowler. But, during his early teenage years, he pivoted to spin bowling. This shift proved advantageous. In the 2020-21 Big Bash League season, representing Sydney Thunder, he was nothing short of sensational. Sangha’s performance yielded 21 wickets across 14 matches. Additionally, his commendable average stood at 18.28, combined with a decent economy rate of 8.08.

The subsequent season saw him netting another 14 wickets. Yet, adversity struck soon after. Sangha had to step back from the game for almost a year due to a troubling lower-back stress injury. As of now, his career statistics are promising. He’s snared 24, 7, and 37 wickets in first-class, List A, and T20 matches respectively.

Tanveer Sangha’s journey is an epitome of talent and resilience. From his early bowling transitions to battling injuries, Sangha’s World Cup selection is undoubtedly well-deserved. Australia’s choice may have raised eyebrows, but only time will reveal if this gamble pays off in the grand Indian arena.
