While the immediate focus of Rohit Sharma is on the Test series against South Africa, inevitably a question in the pre-series press conference came about the T20 World Cup.

There are uncertainties in the Indian camp and the BCCI as to who between Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya will captain India in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA.

Rohit Sharma hasn’t played a T20I for India for more than a year, and Hardik Pandya has already replaced him as the captain of the Mumbai Indians. There hasn’t been an official announcement from the BCCI yet. Hardik is currently injured and could miss next month’s T20I series against Afghanistan.

Rohit will lead India in the 2-Test series against Temba Bavuma’s side starting with the Boxing Day Test in Centurion.

"You Will Get The Answer Soon": Rohit Sharma Gives A Bold Reply When Asked About T20 WC Before 1st IND vs SA Test

On the eve of the first Test, in the press conference, the Indian skipper was queried whether there is any “desperation” in him and the players to win next year’s T20 World Cup after the heartbreaking loss in the World Cup 2023 final.

The Indian captain gave a cracking reply, without giving any information to the journalist.

Question: “When you talk about desperation to win, do you mean the T20 WC?”

Rohit Sharma replied “Whenever the boys get the opportunity, they have to perform. I know what you are trying to say, you will get the answer soon”. [Smiles]

Rohit Sharma missed the 2021/22 tour of South Africa due to injury, and India lost that series 2-1, despite taking a 1-0 lead in the series. Virat Kohli stepped down after that series as the Test skipper and then began the rein of Rohit at the helm of the Test team.

South Africa remains India’s only frontier that they have never conquered. India now aim to record their first-ever Test series win in South Africa.
