Rohit Sharma is one of the most exciting batsmen to watch in world cricket. He has the gift of timing and on his day, he can make batting look ridiculously easy. From a steady-middle order batsman to swashbuckling opener, Rohit has come a long way in Indian cricket and he is one of the most reliable batsmen in shorter formats of the game.

In this post, The Cricket Lounge’s Shivam Behl lists 7 lesser known facts about Rohit Sharma.

1) Rohit Gurunath Sharma was born in 1987 in Nagpur, to a poor family. His father Gurunath Sharma worked with a transport company and his mother Purnima was a housewife.

2) Due to meagre family income, Rohit was sent to live with his relatives in Mumbai’s Borivali locality.

3) Rohit used to go back to his home every weekend to his his parents, who stayed in a small house one-room house in Dombivali.

4) Rohit’s uncle and some other relatives pitched in Rs 50 each to send enrol him in a small cricket academy in 1999.

5) Rohit started his official training as an off-spinner but Dinesh Sad, his coach at the academy, made him change his school and join Swami Vivekananda International School for better training facilities, and recommend that Rohit starts practising batting.

6) Rohit soon started giving good performances but it was the one at the Giles and Harris Shield school cricket tournaments, that impressed the selectors and he was picked for Mumbai’s U17 squad.

7) After that he was picked for India A in 2006 and just one year later, Rohit made his international debut for India in 2007 against New Zealand. He was just 20 years old.

Now, Rohit is one of India’s most reliable batsmen in limited-overs cricket and he is the only cricket in ODI’s history to score two double hundreds. Thanks to big hitting, fans now call him HITMAN of Indian cricket. From being someone who could not afford to get decent training to becoming one of the most loved cricketers in India, Rohit has come a long way and many believe that it’s just a beginning.
