Former India batsman and World Cup hero, Yuvraj Singh believes that Dinesh Karthik should not be included in the Indian squad if he is not part of the playing XI. Yuvraj Singh shared his opinion during an exclusive interview with the International Cricket Council (ICC), where he discussed India’s prospects and squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.
Yuvraj Singh Names India’s Wicketkeeper For T20 World Cup 2024
During the interview, Yuvraj Singh was asked about his choice of wicket-keeper for India for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, specifically in the USA and West Indies. When asked about Dinesh Karthik’s potential inclusion in the Indian squad, Yuvraj rejected the idea.
It has to be noted that Dinesh Karthik has impressed one and all with his brilliant performances for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the ongoing 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League. He recently played a stellar knock of 83 off 34 balls against SunRisers Hyderabad in RCB’s last game. Considering his terrific form, there have been calls for his inclusion in the Indian squad.
However, despite Karthik’s recent performances, Yuvraj Singh has expressed reservations about including him in the 15-man squad if he does not play matches regularly.
Yuvraj Singh suggested that the Indian selection committee should prioritize including in-form wicket-keepers like Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant in the T20 World Cup 2024 squad. He also highlighted how during the previous edition in 2022, DK didn’t get many chances to play and therefore, he believes Karthik should only be included in the squad if he is going to be a regular player for India in the upcoming tournament.
Yuvraj Singh’s viewpoint underscores the importance of selecting players who are likely to have significant playing roles in the team during crucial tournaments like the T20 World Cup.
“DK has been batting well, but the thing with DK is the last time (2022) they picked him and the T20 WC was on he didn’t get to play. If DK is not in your XI I don’t think there is any point in picking him. There is Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson and both guys are in great form and obviously they are younger.”
He added: “I would like to see DK in the mix, but if he is not going to play then you would rather have someone who is younger and can make the difference,” Yuvraj Singh told the ICC.
