As much as the fans are hyped up for the RCB vs KKR match, more hype and talk is around the Gautam Gambhir vs Virat Kohli rivalry that will resume on Friday night.
On Friday evening, at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Faf du Plessis’ Royal Challengers Bengaluru will host Shreyas Iyer’s Kolkata Knight Riders. The Gautam Gambhir vs Virat Kohli will take centre stage as Gambhir has rejoined KKR in their role of a mentor, after leaving Lucknow Super Giants.
It was in Lucknow last year where Virat Kohl and Gautam Gambhir rekindled their animosity toward each other in an epic verbal clash, following Kohli’s altercation with LSG pacer Naveen-ul-Haq.
Their story goes back a long way. From Gambhir’s India days when he handed over his Man of the Match award to a young Kohli, who scored his maiden ODI ton. But as Gambhir got pushed out of Team India with Kohli rising in stature, their issues spilled further.
It reached a crescendo during IPL 2013 when both charged toward each other aggressively hurling abuses, before, fortunately being separated by the players and umpires. Last year, the fire reignited further in Lucknow after the match with Kohli having verbal disputes with Naveen and Gambhir.
Ahead of tonight’s match in Bangalore, Star Sports released a video of Gautam Gambhir talking about RCB and his feelings toward the franchise. Gambhir said it was always his biggest goal in the IPL to beat RCB, considering the opposition had the likes of Gayle, Kohli, and ABD in their side.
Gambhir further slammed the franchise for acting as if they have won the IPL many times while not winning it even a single time.
Gambhir said, “One team which I wanted to beat every time, probably even in my dreams, is RCB. RCB is the second most high-profile team, and flamboyant team, with the owner, and with their squad – Gayle, Kohli, AB de Villiers. RCB hasn’t won anything, but they still thought they won everything. That kind of attitude.”
