Virat Kohli vs Gautam Gambhir: the biggest man-to-man rivalry in the IPL will resume on Friday night at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
On March 29, Faf du Plessis’ Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be hosting Shreyas Iyer’s Kolkata Knight Riders. But all the limelight will be on the Virat Kohli vs Gautam Gambhir rivalry.
Part of India’s 2011 World Cup winning side, Kohli and Gambhir, who once handed Kohli his Man of the Match award for his maiden ODI ton, kicked-on a saga when the senior player was slowly being pushed out of the Indian team as Kohli rose in stature.
Their clash peaked when both came face to face during an IPL 2013 match. After Kohli was dismissed, some words were exchanged between him and Gautam Gambhir, the then KKR captain. Things got so heated that both charged toward each other aggressively and came within touching distance before Rajat Bhatia and the umpires quickly intervened and separated them.
After retiring, Gambhir would regularly make critical comments about Kohli’s captaincy in the IPL and for Team India and also his T20 batting.
Gambhir joined Lucknow Super Giants as their mentor in IPL 2022. Last year, they had an epic clash, not once but twice. After LSG defeated RCB at the Chinnaswamy, Gambhir was seen shushing the crowd. In the return fixture, in Lucknow, Kohli returned the favor with some gestures of his own.
Toward the end of the game, Kohli and LSG pacer Naveen-ul-Haq had an altercation, which then spilled after the match as well with Gambhir getting involved. Gambhir and Kohli had a huge battle after the match in Lucknow, which required the LSG skipper KL Rahul to sort things out as well with the duo.
