In July this year, former India pacer Ajit Agarkar was appointed as the Chairman of Selectors for the Indian men’s cricket team. The 45-year-old was the favorite candidate and the unanimous choice to fill the vacant position left by Chetan Sharma in February.
After retirement from all forms of cricket in 2013, Agarkar forayed into coaching and also in administration. He was the chief selector for Mumbai’s domestic team from 2017 to 2019. Then he took up the bowling coach’s job at Delhi Capitals in the IPL for the last two years. He stepped down from the role at the Capitals this year to put himself in the running for the BCCI Chairman of Selector’s job, which he got with full confidence from the board.
Ajit Agarkar recently named India’s squad for the Asia Cup, and sitting beside him was captain Rohit Sharma. Not only both Ajit Agarkar and Rohit Sharma are from Mumbai, but both have also played together for India. Apart from Rohit, there are a couple of other Indian players as well who have not yet retired from international cricket and played alongside Ajit Agarkar years ago.
3 Indian players who played together with Ajit Agarkar but are not yet retired:
Rohit Sharma
Ajit Agarkar last played for India in 2007, which was the debut year for a young Rohit Sharma. And year, Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar played one ODI match together: on 23 June 2007 against Ireland in Belfast, which India won by 9 wickets. Agarkar took one wicket while Rohit didn’t get to bat in that match.
Rohit and Agarkar also shared the dressing room together in the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa, though both didn’t play together in the tournament, but were part of the T20 WC winning squad.
Dinesh Karthik
In 2006 and 2007, while Ajit Agarkar was at the fag end of his international career, Dinesh Karthik was just getting started having made his debut in 2004.
Agarkar and Dinesh Karthik played 20 international matches together for India between 2004 and 2007. They featured in the same line-up in the 2004 Champions Trophy, 2006 ODI series in South Africa, against Sri Lanka and West Indies in ODIs at home; on India’s tour of Ireland, England, and Scotland in 2007; they also played together in two games in the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa.
Piyush Chawla
Uttar Pradesh leg-spinner Piyush Chawla made his India debut in 2006. He played in 9 matches alongside Ajit Agarkar, all in 2007 – against Ireland, South Africa, Scotland, and England.
The 34-year-old Piyush Chawla last played for India in 2012, but continues to play domestic cricket and in the IPL.
