Generally a sage and minding-his-own-business person, Kane Williamson showed his witty side when he cheekily asked Angelo Mathews about his helmet strap when the Sri Lankan batsman came to bat in the New Zealand vs Sri Lanka match on Thursday.
Sri Lanka and New Zealand faced off in an important, and their last, group-stage game in World Cup 2023 on Thursday in Bangalore. For New Zealand, this game is important to seal their semi-final spot, while Sri Lanka are vying to secure their place in the Champions Trophy 2025.
This is also the first game for Sri Lanka and Angelo Mathews since the Timed Out drama in their last game against Bangladesh a few days ago in Delhi. Mathews had become the first player to be dismissed Timed Out, and had to walk back to the dressing room without facing a ball.
Mathews had protested that his helmet strap had come off just when he was ready to take his guard. However, the umpires, after an appeal from Shakib Al Hasan, adjudged Mathews out, saying that the stipulated time of 2 minutes had passed and he hadn’t got ready to face the ball.

The controversy was sparked further when in the press conference Angelo Mathews called Shakib “disgraceful” and that he doesn’t respect Shakib and his team anymore. The veteran Sri Lankan all-rounder then took to Twitter to post a series of tweets, revealing the time stamps as well that he had been at the crease within two minutes. Mathews is likely to be reprimanded by the ICC in the coming days.
