R Ashwin reveals career-changing MS Dhoni call

In the IPL 2011 final against Royal Challengers Bangalore, MS Dhoni surprised everyone by giving the new ball to Ashwin to bowl against Chris Gayle, who was in great form. Ashwin made an impact by getting Gayle out early, helping the Chennai Super Kings win the title.
This move showcased Ashwin’s talent. He made his debut for India in 2010 and his Test debut in 2011. Recently, he reached the milestone of 100 Test matches and 516 wickets. Ashwin credited MS Dhoni for his success during a recent celebration event organized by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. Ashwin said:
“In 2008 I met all the greats (in CSK dressing room) Mathew Hayden and MS Dhoni. I sat through (IPL) 2008. I was a nobody then, where am I to play in a team that had Muttiah Muralitharan. I am indebted to Dhoni for the rest of my life for what he gave me. He gave me an opportunity with the new ball to go head on with Chris Gayle and 17 years later Anil bhai would be talking about the same episode,”
During his tenure with the CSK franchise from 2008 to 2015, Ashwin played 121 matches and took 120 wickets. He currently stands as the third-highest wicket-taker for CSK, behind Dwayne Bravo with 154 wickets and Ravindra Jadeja with 134 wickets.
Ashwin is preparing for his 17th season in the IPL, where he will represent the Rajasthan Royals once more. The IPL 2024 season is scheduled to kickstart on March 22 in Bengaluru.
