Sri Lankan legend and one of the best batsmen in the history of cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, has broken Adam Gilchrist’s long standing record of most dismissal in One Day International (ODI) cricket.

Sangakkara, who had earlier completed 13,000 ODI runs, added yet another feather to his cap, becoming the cricketer with highest dismissals in ODI cricket, in the third ODI between Sri Lanka and England at Hambantota.

Sangakkara started his career as a wicket keeper batsman, but in the last 3 -4 years, he has not been very keen to take the gloves. He has given up wicket keeping in Test cricket to concentrate more on his batting. In ODI cricket, Sangakkara still keeps but he prefers to field of a wicket keeper is available in the squad.

The table below lists top 5 players with most dismissals in ODI cricket. As expected, all of the are wicket keepers:

MS DhoniIndia312227852004-Present
Moin KhanPakistan287214731990-2004

This list comprises of some of the greatest wicket keepers in the history of cricket. Sangakkara overtook Adam Gilchrist when he caught Alastair Cook in the 3rd ODI between Sri Lanka and England at Hambantota.

If you look at this table closely, you will notice that Adam Gilchrist still has the most number of catches in ODIs. But, if you look at all the dismissals, Kumar Sangakkara is at the top with one more dismissal than Adam Gilchrist.

South African legend Mark Boucher, who was forced to retire after an unfortunate injury on his eye, is third in the list with 424 dismissals.

Indian captain MS Dhoni is fourth in this list with 312 dismissals. Dhoni is India’s best wicket keeper-batsman ever.

Pakistan’s Moin Khan is fifth is the list with 287 dismissals.
