The ICC has levied heavy sanctions on the India opener Shubman Gill for his tweet criticizing the third umpire’s decision to give him out for a contentious, controversial catch by Cameron Green in India’s second innings of the WTC Final 2023.
On Sunday, Australia were crowned the World Test Champions by defeating India at The Oval.
Salt was rubbed on the Indians’ wounds by the ICC by fining the captain and the team for slow over rate, and an additional charge was levied on Shubman Gill for his tweet and Instagram story that carried a disrespectful tone toward the third umpire’s decision.
First, both India and Australia have been docked their match fees for slow over rate throughout the WTC Final 2023.
“India will lose all of their match fees for their slow over rate, with Australia also docked 80 percent of their match fees. India were ruled to be five overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration, while Australia was found to be four overs short. In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time,” the ICC said in their released statement on Monday.
Next, the ICC issued charges over Shubman Gill’s social media activity in regard to the third umpire’s call of giving him out for a contentious catch by Green.
“India’s Shubman Gill will also face a further sanction for appearing to criticise the decision to give him out on the fourth day of the Test, breaching article 2.7 which relates to public criticism or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match,” the ICC added.
For this, Shubman Gill has been penalized 15% of his match fees. In all, thus, the India opener has effectively incurred 115% of match fees in fines.
While India returns home and have no cricket for the next month before their tour of West Indies from July 12, Australia take on England for what promises to be an exciting Ashes series.
