After Australia gave a 444-run target to the Indian cricket team on a tricky pitch at the World Test Championship final at The Oval on Saturday, a controversial and perhaps match-changing incident took place on the field. Shubman Gill‘s dismissal created a huge controversy.
The incident took place just at the stroke of Tea on Day 4 of the WTC Final 2023. Indian opener Shubman Gill, alongwith captain Rohit Sharma gave a rocking start to the Indian team. India raced to 41 without loss in 7 overs with Gill and Rohit scoring freely on both ends of the wicket.
However, a controversy erupted during the eighth over of India’s record 444-run chase when Australia seamer Scott Boland found Gill’s outside edge and Cameron Green lumped to his right side to hold onto the ball at 3rd slip.
Gill was caught by Cameron Green at slip-off Scott Boland. The catch sparked off a controversy as TV replays seemed to suggest that it had been grassed but the third umpire ruled the decision in favor of Australia. Soon after the third umpire’s decision, the crowd started booing and Shubman Gill had to walk back to the pavilion.
The disappointment was clearly visible on the faces of opener Shubman and captain Rohit Sharma, who was not convinced by the decision.
Shubman Gill Sent A Strong Message To Third Umpire
Meanwhile, the controversial dismissal started a full-fledged debate on social media, with several former cricketers and experts joining the debate.
Later in the day, Shubman Gill himself took to his official Twitter handle and took a dig at the third umpire. Sharing the picture of Cameron Green‘s controversial catch, Gill shared a ‘facepalm’ and ‘magnificent glass’ emoji.
