Ajinkya Rahane Is All Set To Become India’s Next Test Captain – Reports

Ajinkya Rahane Is All Set To Become India’s Next Test Captain?: Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been under a lot of pressure after India’s humiliating defeat at the World Test Championship Final 2023 as they were beaten comprehensively by Australia.

Apart from Rohit, coach Rahul Dravid also came under the scanner for misreading the conditions on day one of the Test not picking the No.1 ranked bowler R Ashwin in the playing XI. Rohit’s own form with the bat was also not the greatest as he failed to make it big when it mattered the most for his side, scoring just 15 and 43. Earlier, he had a disappointing season in the IPL 2023, scoring 332 with an average of 20.75.

After a series of disappointing performances, there are chances that Rohit Sharma could be rested for some part of the West Indies tour, starting July 12, according to reports. The Indian cricket team is scheduled to play 2 Test, 3 ODI, and 5 T20Is in the Caribbean with the Test series being part of the fresh World Test Championship Cycle (2023-25).

“The selectors want him to rest for some part of the West Indies tour,” a report in the Times Of India quoted citing an unnamed source.

Rohit looked a bit jaded during the IPL and the World Test Championship final in England. He is likely to miss the Tests or the eight-match white-ball series (three ODIs and five T20Is) to follow. The selectors will speak to Rohit and then take a decision,” the report further added citing the source.

Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane To Be The Next Test Captain?

Rohit Sharma is all set to take the final call on his availability in the West Indies series. If Rohit is unavailable for the series, considering the present circumstances, Ajinkya Rahane will be the best option to give the responsibility of leading the Indian cricket team in the Test series.

For the unversed, Ajinkya Rahane was India’s standout performer in the WTC Final 2023, scoring 89 and 46 runs in two innings. He showed a different version of himself with the bat and has been in a rich vein form.

Ajinkya Rahane also has a decent record as the Test captain as it was under Rahane’s captaincy that team India won two Tests down under to win the series in Australia after then captain Virat Kohli came back to India after the 1st Test.
