Virat Kohli’s was handed India’s Test captaincy after MS Dhoni announced his retirement from the longest format midway through a Test series in Australia. Known for his aggressive style of playing cricket, Kohli was the obvious choice for selectors.

Soon, under Kohli, India started getting good results in Test cricket and also became the number 1 Test team in the world. In the last 3 home series against New Zealand, England and Bangladesh, India played a very dominating brand of cricket and didn’t lose a single match.

After taking over India’s captaincy in Test cricket, Kohli’s batting also improved. After scoring his four double hundreds in consecutive series (West Indies, New Zealand, England and Bangladesh), he became the first batsman ever to do so. Sir Don Bradman and Rahul Dravid could do it only thrice. Under Kohli, the Indian team enjoyed a tremendous run that was snapped in Pune during the 1st Test against Australia. In the first match of the ongoing series against Australia, Virat Kohli’s men were outplayed in all three departments of the game by the Aussies. On a rank turner in Pune, Aussies batted, fielded and bowled better than India and won the Test match by a massive margin of 333 runs.

Under the wicketkeeper-batsman’s leadership, India had never lost a home Test to Australia. Dhoni enjoyed an unblemished record against the team from Down Under, winning 8 matches. Dhoni led India to a 2-0 victory in 2008-09 and 2010-11, and decimated Australia 4-0 in 2012-13.

Virat Kohli might lead India to a series win against Australia in the ongoing 4-match series which Australia lead 1-0, but never losing a home Test against India is a MS Dhoni captaincy record which is way beyond Virat Kohli’s reach.
