India’s current captain Rohit Sharma has moved ahead of former skipper Virat Kohli in the latest ICC Test batsmen’s ranking.
Rohit Sharma had a hefty series against England, both as a captain and batsman. He led a brilliant come-from-behind series win over Ben Stokes‘ team, finishing with the scoreline of 4-1 after being 0-1 down.
With the bat, the senior India opener racked up 400 runs in 9 innings at an average of 44. Rohit Sharma raised two centuries and one half-century in the series; although, given the good nature of pitches, and Rohit’s own form and potential, fans felt he left plenty of runs unscored out in the middle and could have reached the 550 mark. Nonetheless, he was inspirational as a leader and led from the front with the bat when the team needed him.
Rohit Sharma, Jaiswal both overtake Virat Kohli in ICC Test batsmen ranking
His 400 runs in the series have seen him make a huge jump of five spots, from number 11 to number 6 in the ICC Test batsmen ranking. In the process, Rohit skipped over Virat Kohli, Usman Khawaja, and Harry Brook. Kohli and Brook missed the entire Test series for personal reasons, while Khawaja had an ordinary series in New Zealand.
The Test batting ranking continues to be led by New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, followed by Joe Root and Babar Azam. Steve Smith slipped from number 3 to 5 after a torrid time as an opener in New Zealand.
Along with captain Rohit Sharma, youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal (up two places to eighth) and Shubman Gill (up 11 spots to equal 20th) reached new career-best ratings. Jaiswal, who now sits in the 8th position, is one spot ahead of the 9th-placed Virat Kohli. Jaiswal amassed 712 runs while Gill scored 452 runs, the duo ended up being the top two run-scorers of the series.
