Less than 24 hours after India recorded a historic first-ever Test match win in Cape Town, captain Rohit Sharma and senior batsman Virat Kohli have reportedly told the BCCI that they are available for selection in T20Is and are ready to make a return to the shortest format.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli – and KL Rahul – have not featured in a T20I match since the semi-final exit vs England in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Adelaide. With ODI cricket taking precedence in the last year, both Rohit and Kohli took rests from all T20Is that India played in the past 13 months.
The Indian Express has reported that Rohit and Kohli have “informed the BCCI that they are available for selection” in T20I. Both could make their return in the upcoming home T20I series against Afghanistan.
India will host Afghanistan for 3 T20Is on January 11, 14, and 17, before the Test series against England commences on January 25th. This is the only T20I series India have left now before the T20 World Cup 2024, although the form of the players in the IPL will be crucial in their selection or non-selection, especially for those who have not cemented their place in the T20I team.
Rohit Sharma likely to be named the captain for Afghanistan T20Is; KL Rahul, too, could make comeback

The BCCI selectors, headed by Ajit Agarkar, will meet on Friday to pick and announce the squad for the Afghanistan T20Is, and they could also announce the squad for the first two Tests against England.
With Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav injured, if Rohit Sharma is selected, then he will be likely to lead the side as Jasprit Bumrah will be rested.
KL Rahul could make his comeback, too, in the T20I side, but now in the form of a wicket-keeper and middle-order batsman. Rahul has reportedly made up his mind to do keeping and bat in the middle-order for Lucknow in the IPL 2024 to make a case for himself for selection in the T20 World Cup squad.
