IPL 2023 is set to begin in a few days time. Apart from the prestigious trophy, there are many other interesting things at stake. Every year the batters try to outperform each other to win the ‘Orange Cap’, which is to recognize their efforts during the course of the tournament.

With the tournament just a few days away, we bring you a complete list of IPL Orange Cap winners over the years.

2008 – Shaun Marsh:

Shaun Marsh

Shaun Marsh was the first ever in the Indian Premier League. Despite missing 4 games of the season, Marsh managed to score a total of 616 runs in the first edition of the IPL.

He also scored a stunning century in Punjab’s final league game against the season winners Rajasthan Royals.

2009 – Matthew Hayden

Matthew Hayden

Two-time ODI World Cup winner, Matthew Hayden won the orange cap in the 2009 season, with 572 runs across 12 innings. His run-scoring abilities helped Chennai Super Kings reach the semi-finals.

2010 – Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar was named the player of the tournament in 2010 season of IPL. He scored a total of 618 runs off 14 innings and won the Orange Cap.

2011 – Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle

The Universe Boss Chris Gayle got his hands on the Orange Cap in his first season for the Royal Bangalore Challengers. He amassed 608 runs off 12 innings and was also named the player of the season in 2011.

2012 – Chris Gayle

Gayle won the Orange Cap for the second time in 2012. Though, he missed the start of the season because of an injury, however, he later bounced back to have a memorable season. He amassed 733 runs off, with 7 fifties, a hundred, and an impressive strike rate of 160.74. During that season, Gayle smashed 59 sixes, which is still a record for the most sixes in a single IPL season.

2013 – Michael Hussey

Michael Hussey won the Orange Cap in the 2013 season. He equaled the record of Gayle from last season, scoring 733 runs from 16 innings which included 2 playoff games against the Mumbai Indians. 

2014 – Robin Uthappa

Robin Uthappa Orange Cap

Robin Uthappa is the first player in the IPL orange cap, who was a part of the IPL winning team as well. Robin created a T20 record, with 40+ scores in 8 consecutive games. He amassed 660 runs in that season.

2015 – David Warner

David Warner

David Warner, who won the T20 World Cup in 2021 for Australia, won his first Orange Cap in 2015. Warner became the fourth Australia to win the Orange Cap winner.

2016 – Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli

Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli had a memorable season in 2016, where he broke all records. He amassed 973 runs, which is still the record for the most runs scored in a single IPL season. During that season Kohli, who was also the captain of the side, scored 4 stunning centuries.

2017 – David Warner

David Warner

Warner once again won the IPL Orange Cap in 2017. He scored 641 runs off 14 innnings in that season, which also guided the SunRisers Hyderabad to the playoffs.

2018 – Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson became the first player from New Zealand to win the Orange Cap. He scored 735 runs off 17 innings and helped SRH reach the final.

2019 – David Warner

David Warner

Warner is currently the only player in IPL history to win the Orange Cap for 3 times. He amassed 692 runs off just 12 innings for SRH, including a stunning century against KKR. Notably, he wasn’t even there with the squad until the end of the tournament as he departed early for the World Cup preparations, but he still managed to win the Orange Cap.

2020 – KL Rahul

KL Rahul

KL Rahul had a great season in 2020 when he won the Orange Cap. He scored 670 runs as an opener and all thanks to his amazing performances, he started receiving more chances.

2021 – Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad won the Orange Cap in the 2021 season, after his stunning performance for Chennai Super Kings in the 2021 season. He also received the emerging player award for his efforts.

2022 – Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler had an exceptional season in 2022. He stole the show with his batting prowess as he scored 863 runs, including the highest score of 116 runs.
