The second-leg of the Indian Premier League 2021 is just around the corner and the fans just can’t wait for the tournament to resume. IPL 2021 was suspended mid-way because of the outbreak of the Coronavirus within the bio-bubble. Now with the second-leg of IPL 2021 just a few days away from getting started, former Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Dinesh Karthik has come down hard on the Orange Cap award.
For the unversed, any player who scores the most number of runs in a single season of IPL earns the Orange Cap. In the 2020 edition of IPL, KL Rahul, the skipper of PBKS, won the Orange Cap. However, DK feels that it as one of the silliest awards.
Recently, while speaking to Aakash Chopra on his YouTube channel, Dinesh Karthik expressed his displeasure regarding the Orange cap is the silliest award given in the extravagant T20 league.
Karthik believes that players who impact the game most in the t20 format are finishers and not the ones who open the innings. He stated that players like Andre Russell or Kieron Pollard make a lot of impact in the game but they can never score as many runs as openers like KL Rahul or Rohit Sharma. He said:
“I think the Orange Cap is one of the silliest awards to give away in the IPL. They (the organizers) could think of it in a much better way. Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell would never win the Orange Cap because they would not get the runs a Rohit Sharma or a Quinton de Kock or any other opener gets.”
He added:
“What they would do though has influenced a lot more matches with their batting than the openers during the course of a season. We are still in that number of runs and that kind of thing. But (in T20Is) it comes down to that impact things,”
Meanwhile, Dinesh Karthik, who is currently busy with his stint as a commentator, will return to action during the second half of the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders.
