Virat Kohli has been a sensational batter in limited overs cricket for over a decade. He had an off form ICC T20 World Cup 2024 but stepped up on the day of the final with a 76 runs inning to lead India to victory. After the 2024 World Cup, Kohli announced his retirement from T20I cricket to focus on ODIs and Test cricket.
He made his comeback in the 3-game ODI series against Sri Lanka. However, the series did not go well for Virat Kohli as India slumped to a 2-0 defeat. Kohli looked clueless against the Sri Lankan spinners as his woes against spin bowling were evident clearly. Former Indian cricket, Dinesh Karthik, talked about Kohli’s struggles in the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
Dinesh Karthik On Virat Kohli and his Struggles Against Spin
Karthik explained that the pitch in the series has been challenging for playing spin, not just for Virat Kohli but also for other top players like Rohit Sharma. He emphasized that the period between overs 8 to 30, when the ball is slightly older, has been particularly tough.
Karthik pointed out that while this isn’t a typical situation, the conditions made it difficult for anyone, including Kohli, to handle spin bowling. He wasn’t trying to defend Kohli, but simply acknowledged the challenge of playing on such a pitch.
“It’s been a tough pitch to play spin in this series, let’s admit that first. Be it Virat Kohli, be it Rohit Sharma, or be it anyone else. With the slightly semi-new ball between overs of about 8 to 30, it’s been hard work. It’s nothing to worry about. Not too many pitches work that way, but it’s been a tough pitch to play spinners. I’m not going to defend Virat Kohli here, but I can tell you that playing spin was very hard,” Karthik told Cricbuzz.
