37-year-old David Warner has once again reaffirmed his retirement plans from international cricket.
After bagging the Man of the Series award for Australia’s 2-1 T20I series win over West Indies, the pocket dynamo opener confirmed that the T20 World Cup 2024 in June in the West Indies and USA will be his last tournament in Australia colors.
Aged 37, Warner had revealed his retirement plans last year and it’s going as planned for the opener. He retired from Test cricket at his home ground in Sydney last month, when he also confirmed his ODI retirement with the World Cup 2023 being his last appearance in the format.
Now, he has played his last international game in Australia. The left-hander recorded scores of 70, 22, and 80 against the West Indies.
“Well and truly done,” he said at the presentation ceremony in Perth. “It’s time for the youngsters to come through and showcase their talent. We’ve got extreme talent here. We’re in good stead for the future.”
Australia play 3 more T20Is in New Zealand before the IPL, which will be followed by the T20 World Cup. David Warner was the Man of the Tournament in Australia’s 2020 T20 World Cup triumph in the UAE.
David Warner targets becoming a full-time dad after retirement
The veteran opener is only the third cricketer, along with Virat Kohli and Ross Taylor, to feature in 100 games in each format.
As his international career is coming to a close, David Warner is ready to be a full-time dad for his three girls.
“Freshening up and spending some time with the girls. Not sure that’s going to freshen me up but it’ll be great to spend some time with them and work on their schooling and sport and just be home in my bed,” the opener added.
Australia T20I captain Mitchell Marsh gushed in praise for Warner.
“It’s obviously been an amazing career for him,” Marsh said. “I guess it’s kind of fitting for him to finish the way it has [with that innings]. “What a servant to Australian cricket. Unfortunately we couldn’t get a win for him.”
Next month, Warner will feature in the IPL for the Delhi Capitals, although he is unlikely to captain them as Rishabh Pant is on his way to a. return.
