IND vs AUS: R Ashwin Creates New All-Time Record In Border-Gavaskar Trophy

R Ashwin Creates New All-Time Record In Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Senior India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin led India’s bowling attack with a brilliant solo performance in the 4th Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Even as the Australian batters made hay in the batting-friendly conditions in Ahmedabad, R Ashwin kept the lid on the run-scoring from his end and got into wickets later in Australia’s innings.

Ashwin’s figures of 6/91 in 47.2 overs, which is an economy rate of 1.9, stood miles ahead of the other four Indian bowlers on show in Ahmedabad as Australia were bowled out for 480 in their first innings, batting for 167.2 overs.

If India have a slight chance of winning this match, it is because of R Ashwin

When the wickets were not coming, R Ashwin focused on stemming the run-flow, which the other bowlers didn’t help in doing much from the other end. India had bowled brilliantly for 80 overs on Day 1, but after that, both the pacers, Umesh and Shami, leaked runs, and Jadeja and Axar too barely looked like taking a wicket.

On Day 2, Khawaja and Green continued their partnership and were unbeaten throughout the first session. In the second session, then Ashwin dismissed Green and Carey in one over before taking out Starc. Axar got rid of Khawaja but the pair of Lyon and Murphy frustrated India. Their 70-run 8th wicket stand was broken by Ashwin, who dismissed both of them to finish with a six-wicket haul, including the dismissal of Head from Day 1.

R Ashwin created a number of records today

The two most pronounced records of all are:

Ashwin is the leading-wicket taker among Indian bowlers against Australia:

113* – R Ashwin

111 – Anil Kumble

95 – Harbhajan Singh

85* – Ravindra Jadeja

R Ashwin is the joint-leading wicket-taker in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy: (the BGT started in 1996)

113* – N Lyon

113* – R Ashwin

111 – A Kumble

95- Harbhajan Singh

85* – Ravindra Jadeja

R Ashwin’s bowling average of 28.1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is the best amongst all the five aforementioned bowlers.

Meanwhile, the Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill remained unbeaten in the 10 overs they phased toward the end of the day, scoring 36 runs. India will have to bat the entire Day 3 to continue to have a chance to winning this Test – they will also have to score at a faster rate than Australia did; Shubman Gill did show his intentions by dancing down and smashing Lyon for a six in the last over of the day – and to have their chances alive of reaching the WTC final.
