Team India have Dhruv Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav to thank for keeping them alive in the Ranchi Test against England.
The right-hander scored 90 runs and proved that he belongs to Test level, while Kuldeep Yadav made a vigil of 131 balls to support Jurel as the duo brought India close to England’s first innings total of 353.
India were bowled out by Lunch on Day 3 for 307, conceding a deficit of 46 runs. This deficit could have been much more if not for Dhruv Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav. The hosts were struggling at 177/7 yesterday evening as Shoaib Bashir took four wickets; the off-spinner completed his five-for with the wicket of Akash Deep on Day 3.
On Day 2 evening, Jurel and Kuldeep mostly defended and rotated the strike, completing their first aim to take India to stumps without losing the 8th wicket. On the morning of Day 3, while Kuldeep continued his resilience, Dhruv Jurel played audacious shots to cut down the difference between India and England’s totals.
The right-hander cracked six fours and 4 fours sixes in his knock of 90 runs in 149 balls. He unfortunately fell 10 runs short of what would have been his maiden Test century in only his second Test match. He got a superb delivery from Tom Hartley that pitched on middle and turned considerably to beat Jurel’s defence and hit the off-stump.
He got a standing ovation from the Indian dressing room. Earlier, after completing his half-century, Dhruv Jurel gave a salute, paying tribute to his father who is a Kargil war veteran.
Fans hailed Dhruv Jurel for his fighting knock in Ranchi:
