India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against New Zealand due to a back injury. On Tuesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India took to their official social media accounts and made the big announcement. The BCCI confirmed that Shreyas will be heading to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further assessment and management.
The BCCI via their official press release also informed that the All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Rajat Patidar as the replacement for Shreyas Iyer. The statement by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah read:
“Team India batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against New Zealand due to a back injury. He will be heading to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further assessment and management.
The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Rajat Patidar as replacement for Shreyas Iyer.”
While the BCCI made the big announcement, however, the exact nature of the injury, recovery time, or details of when he suffered the injury have not been divulged by the Indian board. Shreyas Iyer was a part of the recently-concluded ODI series against Sri Lanka, where he played in all three games.
With Shreyas getting ruled out of the series, Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid now have no selection dilemmas. With KL Rahul, Axar Patel and now Shreyas all three out of the New Zealand series, Ishan Kishan looks all set for a comeback being the wicketkeeper in the IND vs NZ 1st ODI. Shubman Gill, who slammed a fine century in his last ODI will also continue. Also, in the absence of KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav will get an extended run in the middle order.
India’s updated ODI squad against New Zealand: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan (wk), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, KS Bharat (wk), Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Rajat Patidar, Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik.
