Following his fighting century at the Supersport Park in Centurion, KL Rahul got the biggest praise from Sunil Gavaskar.
The legendary Indian opener said that KL Rahul’s ton was amongst the top 10 Test centuries by Indian batters that he’s seen in his life, having been playing and then commentating on India’s matches for decades.
Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports: “I have been watching cricket since 50 years, I can surely say this hundred by Rahul is in the Top 10 in the Indian history of Tests.”
Rahul had to battle out the South African pacer attack, spearheaded by the in-form Kagiso Rabada, on a tough, spicy pitch under overcast conditions in Centurion. He was also batting out of his regular position of an opener and was playing his first Test as a designated wicket-keeper. His century, while batting for a long period with tailenders, helped India post a fighting total of 245 runs.
It’s a pretty huge compliment to get: KL Rahul

At the end of Day 2, KL Rahul got to know about Gavaskar’s comments. He said he felt very humbled by this huge compliment from Gavaskar.
“Firstly, I’m very humbled he’s made that comment. It’s a pretty huge compliment to get,” Rahul said.
Then, he talked about the new adjustment he’s had to make to bat in the lower-middle-order on his return to the Test side.
“Batting in the middle order, what I’ve realized is that you can’t really plan your innings all that much when you walk in. There is a situation in front of you. The game tells you how you need to play and what you need to do in that time and in that moment.” he added.

Meanwhile, riding on Dean Elgar’s century and half-century from David Bedingham, South Africa took a slender 11-run lead with 5 wickets in hand by the end of Day 2. Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna let the contest slip away in the second session yesterday.
