Punjab Kings registered their sixth win of the season by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore in a must-win game at the Brabourne Stadium on Friday. Punjab Kings captain Mayank Agarwal impressed one and all with his selfless decision to demote himself down the order in order to accommodate Jonny Bairstow at the top of the order.

In a couple of previous PBKS games as well, Mayank Agarwal had selflessly demoted himself down the order in order to accommodate Jonny Bairstow. The Englishman smashed a stunning 29-ball 66 which gave a flying start to Punjab Kings and set the platform for a huge total of 209 runs.

The Punjab Kings bowlers then put on an excellent combined effort to restrict the RCB batters to 155 runs and win the game by 54 runs. Bairstow was adjudged the Player of the Match award for his exhilarating knock.

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar took to his social media and hailed Mayank Agarwal for his selfless decision. Calling him a true team leader, Sanjay Manjrekar heaped praises on Mayank. He wrote:

“Want to see a true team man/leader? Look no further than Mayank Agarwal, sacrificing the opening position at which he has been hugely successful to offer Bairstow the best chance to flourish. So along with ‘well played’ Jonny, let’s also say well done Mayank!”

Punjab Kings’ head coach Anil Kumble also praised the selfless decision of Mayank to demote himself down the order. He said:

“He (Bairstow) is an exceptional player. His experience at the top of the order it’s not easy for Mayank who has done exceptionally well at the top to sacrifice his place and come down the order. We felt that we needed an experienced guy in the middle as well with Levy, Jitesh and Rishi,”
