IPL 2022: Ravi Shastri Made A Big Statement On Ravindra Jadeja’s Captaincy

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has said that Ravindra Jadeja had seemed like a “fish out of water” during his stint as the Chennai Super Kings skipper that lasted 8 matches in IPL 2022 out of which the team only won two.

With the team not putting up impressive performances and his own form taking a dip, Jadeja handed back the captaincy to MS Dhoni.

Ravi Shastri reckoned Jadeja was never a “natural captain”. He also defended Jadeja pointing out that the left-hander had prior experience in leadership at higher levels, adding that it was the franchise’s decision and Jadeja shouldn’t be faulted for CSK‘s failures this season.

“He [Jadeja] is not a natural captain. He hasn’t captained at any level. So, to give him the responsibility I thought was a little hard on Jadeja. People might want to judge Jaddu, but it’s not his fault. He hasn’t captained anywhere. He looked a fish out of water, totally out of place and he’s far better off playing as a player. Because he’s one of the best around in the business, when it comes to allrounders,” Ravi Shastri told ESPNcricinfo.

Jadeja hasn’t had the best time on the field, managing only 116 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 118 and has taken only 5 wickets.

“So let him just focus on his cricket. That [decision to give him the captaincy] cost CSK a few games early on. If you see the form they’re in now, if they had this going early on, they’ll be right up there in the mix,” Shastri added.
CSK have started to flourish straightaway under
Dhoni: the defending champions have kept their playoff hopes alive with two wins in the last three matches. CSK have 8 points in 11 matches and now have a positive net run rate. Should they win all their 3 remaining games, which will take them to 14 points, and all other results fall in their favour, they could force a 14-point tie with one or two other teams for the fourth spot.
