In 2008, MS Dhoni was promoted to the position of captain for the Chennai Super Kings. He’s still running the show in 2023.
MS Dhoni, one of the best cricketers of all time, has excelled as a captain and player in the Indian Premier League. Dhoni was the first captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team, which he joined after being purchased as the franchise’s marquee player at the 2008 auction. Dhoni joined the other captains of the IPL 2023 franchises at the preseason press conference for the 16th season of the T20 league.
To play at the highest level for 15 years is an incredible feat. Dhoni has excelled not only as a wicket-keeper batter, but also as one of the most successful captains in the history of the league.

Almost simultaneously with the release of the 2023 IPL captains photo, a photo of the 2008 IPL captains surfaced online, with Dhoni being the only holdover from the current group.
Dhoni’s participation in the season opener against the Gujarat Titans is still up in the air. There is some doubt as to whether or not the 41-year-old will play in the tournament opener after he did not bat at the nets on Thursday due to a knee injury he sustained during a training session in Chennai.
Team CEO Kasi Vishwanathan though said: “As far as I am concerned, Dhoni will play 100 percent.” But Pandya would love to match his wits with the original ‘Captain Cool’ and hope that he plays.
Dhoni, having played in every IPL, is familiar with the formula for success in that tournament. Even with closed eyes, one can attest that there was no fault in planning, but the execution wasn’t on expected lines, such as the last time they didn’t make the playoffs.
Dhoni, who carefully plans his moves, may choose to become the team’s ‘Impact Player‘ if they need it during pursuits.
