Jasprit Bumrah, the young Indian pacer is regarded as one of the best bowlers in the world across all three formats of the game. Bumrah, who is known for his accurate yorkers in death overs, has inspired many with his inspiring journey into one of India’s premier fast bowler in all the formats of the game.
Recently, in an interview, Jasprit Bumrah narrated an interesting conversation he had on his ODI debut with the former Indian skipper MS Dhoni during an ODI match against Australia in 2016.
Jasprit Bumrah, who made his debut for team India against Australia in an ODI said that before that Dhoni had never seen him bowl and this was probable the reason why Dhoni advised him against trying yorkers on his debut match. He revealed:
“Well, it was his decision, and everybody respects it. At a personal level, I made my debut under him and he gave me a lot of confidence. Not many people know that Mahi bhai had never seen me bowl, at any level. In my debut game, I was going to bowl in the death overs and I asked him ‘can I bowl yorkers?’ and he was like ‘no, don’t bowl yorkers’. He thought since it was a difficult delivery, I wouldn’t be able to pull it off.”
Jasprit Bumrah went on to execute yorkers perfectly and gave away only 3 runs in 49th over of Australia’s innings. Further, he revealed what Dhoni said that to him after Jasprit Bumrah charmed him with his yorkers. He said:
“I told him ‘in death overs, I don’t know what else to do’. So, anyway, I went ahead and did my thing and then he came to me and was like “I didn’t know this at all. You should’ve come earlier, we would’ve won the whole series”. Here was me, making a nervous debut and the captain telling me “you could’ve won us this series”. He gave me a lot freedom.”
Jasprit Bumrah also talked about his upcoming stint with Mumbai Indians in the upcoming edition of the IPL, he said that his team has always looked to raise the bar. He said:
“When you play for a successful franchise, expectations will always be there. We have a very good team. There’s Trent Boult that I’m looking forward to bowling with. Mumbai Indians have always looked to raise the bar.”
Meanwhile, IPL 2020 will kickstart from 19th September in UAE with an opening clash between the defending champions Mumbai Indians and the runner-ups of 2019 World Cup Chennai Super Kings.
