While Ben Duckett got praised for his sizzling century on Day 2 of the Rajkot Test, his comments on India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal didn’t go down well with anyone, including former England captain Michael Vaughan, who joined the Indian fans in slamming the England opener.
As Duckett did with the Indian bowlers on the evening of Day 2, Yashasvi Jaiswal sent the England bowlers and fielders on a leather hunt on the evening of Day 3 of the Rajkot Test during his spectacular century, which he converted into a double ton on Day 4. In this double century, Jaiswal equaled Wasim Akram’s record of 12 sixes in an innings.
After seeing Jaiswal’s enterprising innings, Ben Duckett said that some credit should go to England for branding and championing such an aggressive approach in Test cricket.
Ben Duckett had said, “When you see players from the opposition playing like that, it almost feels like we should take some credit that they’re playing differently than how other people play Test cricket.”
As Jaiswal and Sarfaraz tore into the England bowlers on Day 4, the England opener was torn on social media for his remarks on the Indian left-hander. Fans pointed out that before England began their Bazball era, batters like Virender Sehwag, Matthew Hayden, and even Rishabh Pant had already glorified Test cricket with their attacking style of play.
Michael Vaughan, too, was unimpressed with Duckett’s comments on Jaiswal.
The 2005 Ashes-winning captain wrote in his column for The Telegraph, “Duckett also reckons they deserve credit for the way Yashasvi Jaiswal is batting, as if no player in history has ever played an attacking shot. They talk about not playing for the draw, but to me that’s disrespectful to Test cricket. The draw is a crucial part of the game, and in five-Test contest has often provided the bedrock of some great series victories,”
This is how fans reacted to Ben Duckett’s comment on Yashasvi Jaiswal:
