Michael Vaughan feels that Rohit Sharma may join Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025. Additionally, he suggested that Ruturaj Gaikwad’s tenure as captain of CSK might be limited to the 2024 season. Vaughan suggested that Rohit Sharma could be a suitable successor for someone like MS Dhoni.
Michael Vaughan Made A Bold Claim About Rohit Sharma
Despite Michael Vaughan’s remarks, there’s ongoing speculation about MS Dhoni’s future in the IPL. Dhoni himself hinted last year that IPL 2024 could mark his final season as a player. Speaking to YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia in a podcast show, Vaughan said:
“I think he will go to Chennai, replace MS Dhoni. Gaikwad is doing it this year. Do you think it’s just a holding job? May be Rohit next year?”
“I see him in Chennai. I seem him there. If he were to captain Chennai and came to Mumbai, will he get booed?” Vaughan asked, adding that he feels that Rohit would be headed to CSK next year.
CSK addressed the crucial question of succession by entrusting Ruturaj Gaikwad, a consistent performer since the 2021 season, with the leadership. Under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Chennai Super Kings have won three out of their first five games, maintaining a stunning record at their home ground in Chennai.
The Mumbai Indians’ captaincy situation has been a major talking point leading up to IPL 2024 and during the initial weeks of the tournament. Hardik Pandya, who replaced Rohit Sharma as captain, faced backlash from fans at the Wankhede Stadium. Some Mumbai Indian supporters expressed displeasure over Rohit Sharma’s removal as the franchise’s captain.
Rohit Sharma, who led India to the ODI World Cup final, was replaced as captain after the mini-auction in December. Mumbai Indians appointed Hardik Pandya, traded from Gujarat, as their new captain.
Michael Vaughan expressed his surprise that Rohit Sharma wasn’t leading the franchise in IPL 2024 but criticized the booing directed at Hardik Pandya. He emphasized Pandya’s importance to India’s prospects in the upcoming T20 World Cup, which begins on June 1. He said:
“Hardik is going through a difficult time and it’s not his fault. He has been asked to come back to the Mumbai Indians. He has been asked to be the captain. Who is going to say no that? He has just been given a job that pretty much every single cricketer in India would like to do, captain the MI… I personally would have kept Rohit. Hardik coming back to Mumbai is big enough pressure in itself. Rohit, once he had a good World Cup, he is obviously going to captain India in the T20 World Cup. The sensible move would have been Rohit captaining MI and Hardik, in mind, for the next year or year after,”
