Mike Hesson Reveals How RCB Plan To Use Impact Player Rule: The Impact Player rule – or as some term it “Substitution” rule – has created quite a buzz among fans and also among the players and the franchise management, all of whom are excited to see how this new rule in the IPL 2023 will play out, and what impact it could have on the game and the result.
RCB‘s Director of Cricket Mike Hesson has asserted that the all-rounders could be involved heavily in this Player rule, which was used in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and will be used in the IPL for the first time.
What is Impact Player rule in IPL?

The Impact Player allows the team to substitute a player with another who can come in to bat and bowl, to participate like any other regular player, at any stage of the game.
A team will have to list four substitutes at the toss. They can use any one of the four subs as their Impact Player. The replaced player will take no further part in the match.
Mike Hesson talked of his opinion about this Impact Player , saying that the all-rounders will be heavily involved in this strategy.
“I think we heard about the Impact Player before the auction, so obviously we looked at it and thought about how can we maximise it. Potential for the all-rounder to play a big part. So actually there is some strategy involved in it,” Mike Hesson said in a video posted on Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Twitter handle.
Apart from Glenn Maxwell and Shahbaz Ahmed, both of whom are likely starters in Royal Challengers Bangalore’s XI, the other all-rounders in the Challengers squad are Michael Bracewell, David Willey, Akash Deep, and Manoj Bhandage.
Mike Hesson liked this “substitute” rule where a batter can be replaced by a bowler or vice versa.
“I quite like it… I actually thought it brought a little intrigue. You could introduce the player anytime. So whether the batter is being dismissed or not… It was a nice development.”
“It’s a substitute rule. So you name at the toss whether you have a batting eleven which will obviously be stronger. And if you bat first you will swap out a batter and bring in an extra bowler so vice versa and the other way around. So after the toss, you give them your batting 11 and bowling 11. So it’s not an impact rule now it’s a substitute rule.”
When can a team use Impact Player?
A captain can nominate the team’s Impact Player and bring them in before the start of the second innings or at the end of an over or at the fall of a wicket or when a batter retires.
However, if the bowling side brings in an Impact Player during an over – at the fall of a wicket or if a batter retires – then that particular player will not be allowed to bowl the remaining balls of the over.
The Impact Player should be an Indian only to limit the number of overseas players to 4 per game to four per team. Only in the case when a team starts with less than 4 overseas players can the Impact Player be an overseas player.
