Nasser Hussain Points At Two Big Mistakes By Captain Rohit Sharma On Day 1 In Ranchi Test

Veteran commentator Nasser Hussain believes India captain Rohit Sharma made two major tactical mistakes on Day 1 of the Ranchi Test that could hurt India a lot in the match.

On a low-bouncing pitch littered with cracks that are bound to open in the coming sessions, Joe Root batted superbly to help England go past 300 on Day 1 at the JSCA international stadium.

India, however, had taken the upper hand in the first session with five wickets for 112 runs, after Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bat first. But, India ceased control of the day from thereon as Joe Root forged two brilliant, fighting partnerships with Ben Foakes and Ollie Robinson. Root brought up his 31st Test century and his 10th against India as England finished Day 1 on 302/7.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain pointed at the two mistakes he feels Rohit Sharma made and something that could have been avoided by the Indian skipper.

Hussain reckoned Rohit should have started the second session, after the lunch break, with Akash Deep as the ball was still new-ish and the best time to utilize the conditions was with the new ball. Rohit started the second session with Ashwin and Jadeja and that allowed Root and Foakes to settle down with the pitch going slow.

In his column for the Daily Mail, Nasser Hussain wrote, “I thought India got a couple of things wrong. This feels like a new-ball pitch to me, and I’d have opened after lunch with one seamer – probably Akash Deep, who bowled so well in the morning – and one spinner. But Rohit Sharma went with two spinners, when the ball was not even 25 overs old.”

Later in the day, Rohit Sharma surprisingly continued to have his bowlers bowl with the old ball, even when the second new ball was available after 80 overs. India didn’t make any dent in the last 10 overs and even Ollie Robinson looked comfortable.
Hussain added, Then, at the end of the day, with the second new ball available, Rohit declined to take it, when Deep or Mohammed Siraj might have nipped out another wicket or two.”

Hussain concluded by lavishing huge praise for Root, saying But take nothing away from Root: this was the day he reminded us why, when he eventually walks away from the game, he will be England’s leading Test run-scorer by a country mile.”
