‘S Sajana Lost Almost Everything In Kerala Floods’: Jemimah Rodrigues Applauds MI’s Last-Ball Hero

Kerala’s S Sajana became the hero for the Mumbai Indians women’s team in the opening game of the WPL 2024 against the Delhi Capitals women’s team on Friday evening at the Chinnaswamy stadium when she smashed a stunning six with five runs needed off the last ball.

The WPL 2024 opening fixture produced a topsy-turvy, last-ball thrilling contest between the finalists of the last season, with Harmanpreet Kaur’s side, once again, emerging victorious.

While it was the captain Harmanpreet Kaur who bagged the Player of the Match award for her brilliant innings of 55 runs in 34 balls in the chase of 172, S Sajana (Sajeevan Sajana) hogged the limelight for her nerveless blow on the last ball, against off-spinner Alice Capsey to steal the win at the very last instant.

Despite ending up on the losing side, Delhi Capitals’ Jemimah Rodrigues was happy for S Sanjana. Through her social media handles, Jemimah Rodrigues revealed the struggle-filled journey of Sanjana, who “lost almost everything” during the Kerala floods in 2018.

29-year-old Sanjana is the daughter of an auto-rickshaw driver from Wayanad. She has had to undergo immense hardships, which included paying off the debts of her family.

Jemimah Rodrigues tweeted, “The result was not what we hoped for but what a finish by Sajju the debutant! Comes from a humble background, lost almost everything in the Kerala floods, walks in when the team requires 1 ball 5 runs and hits an effortless six! What a story and more over what a player! 🙌🏻,” she tweeted along with sharing a video of Sajana’s match-winning six.”

MIW captain Harmanpreet gave an insight into S Sanjana’s prowess as a power-hitter.

In her post-match press conference, Kaur said, “Sajana gave us a solid start to the tournament, she’s been smacking sixes throughout the practice sessions… We just wanted to look at the boundary options in the last over, good thing was that the spinner came. We were looking to finish the game in the first three balls itself, we had depth in the batting – because of Sajana I am standing here!”
