R Ashwin hasn’t played a T20I for India since the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final loss against England in Adelaide. Washington Sundar has been selected in the T20I squad for the ongoing series against Afghanistan.

Ashwin would look to make a comeback in the T20I squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 in June this year in the West Indies and the USA.

Talking about the India vs Afghanistan 1st T20I, India kick-started the series with a 6-wicket win. Afghanistan could post only an under-par total of 158 runs as Mukesh Kumar and Axar Patel took two wickets each,

In the chase, India lost skipper Rohit Sharma for a duck, via a run-out, but the returning Shivam Dube cracked a brilliant half-century, scoring 60 runs in 40 balls while Gill, Tilak Varma, and Jitesh Sharma played handy cameos as India won with 2.3 overs to spare.

Shivam Dube, the Player of the Match, said: “It was really cold. I enjoyed playing on this ground, There was some pressure, I had one thing on my mind – I had to play my game. First 2-3 balls, I feel some pressure, after that I focus on the ball, I know I can hit big sixes. Bowling, I got the opportunity and I executed.”
