India head coach Rahul Dravid has picked the current captain, Rohit Sharma, as India’s greatest six-hitter, overlooking the likes of MS Dhoni, Kapil Dev, and Yuvraj Singh.
Ever since he burst onto the scene, the highlight trait of Rohit Sharma’s batting has been his god-like timing and power that used to belie his lean body in his teen years and 20s, until he started bulking up over the past 5-6 years.
The ‘lazy elegance’ is a term used in reverence to Rohit because of how effortless his sixes look. As his career has progressed, Rohit Sharma has turned into a six-hitting beast and one by one knocking off records of sixes in international cricket.
Rahul Dravid has claimed that Rohit is India’s “greatest six-hitter”. And this is not a misplaced or recency-influenced comment from the current head coach. With 597 sixes, Rohit already holds the record for most sixes in international cricket ever!
In ODIs, he has 323 sixes, only behind Shahid Afridi (351) and Chris Gayle (331). His Test career has been a stop-start one, and yet he has 84 sixes in 59 Tests, the second-most among Indians after Sehwag and more than MS Dhoni and 12th in all-time. His 190 T20I sixes are the most as well.
In Dharamsala, after India’s series win over England, Rahul Dravid said, “It is incredible to watch, and it is one facet of the game that is at a different level. We have someone (Rohit Sharma) who is the greatest six-hitter India has ever produced. It is phenomenal-the six-hitting power, the skill, and the ability. Every time they hit the ball, it seems to go out. It’s amazing.”

In the series against England, Rohit scored 400 runs at an average of 44 with two centuries and one fifty. His captaincy on the field and leadership off the field were called upon as India went down in Hyderabad and were bereft of important players either partially of for the entirety of the series.
Dravid credited Rohit for keeping the dressing room environment calm and relaxed.
“It’s a pleasure to watch Rohit bat, from middle order to opener, it has been a great journey – with 3 down in Rajkot, scoring that hundred. Credit goes to Rohit Sharma to keep the dressing room calm and cool and relaxed after the loss of first test match,” Dravid added.
