Ravi Ashwin Picks SRH’s New Captain: After the conclusion of the 2023 IPL Auction in December last year, SunRisers Hyderabad was the only team without a captain. SunRisers Hyderabad parted ways with former captain Kane Williamson ahead of the auction while retaining the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Aiden Markram. The team mangement also played a masterstroke and signed in talented Indian opener Mayank Agarwal at the auction.
Mayank Agarwal, who led the Punjab Kings is being tipped to become the next captain of the Hyderabad-based franchise, especially given that Sunrisers may have had enough of overseas captains. Several experts and cricketers have backed the Indian domestic star for the position, however, India’s senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin wants another foreign player to take over the reins of SunRisers Hyderabad.
Ravi Ashwin Ditches Mayank Agarwal:
Yes, speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said that Markram will become the next Sunrisers captain following his heroics with Sunrisers’ sister franchise in the SA20. For the unversed, Markram captained Sunrisers Eastern Cope and took the team to the maiden title in the inaugural edition of the SA20.
Apart from his brilliant performance as a captain, Markram impressed one and all with his all-around show, having amassed 336 runs with the bat, including a match-winning century in the semi-final against Joburg Super Kings, and picked 11 wickets with the ball. He also earned the player of the tournament title.
Ashwin claimed that Markram has proved why he is he is a star and he has no doubt in his mind that the Proteas all-rounder will leave behind Bhuvi and Mayank in the captaincy race. He said:
“Aiden Markram proved why he is a star. He had to have a good season and that is why Sunrisers had backed him. I have no doubt Aiden Markram will be the captain for Sunrisers Hyderabad as well in the IPL. It was an extraordinary SA20 season for him. He scored runs and picked up wickets as well.”
He added:
“So, very well done to Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Despite a few injury concerns for MI Cape Town, the Sunrisers were the one that gelled well as a team,”
Ravi Ashwin also mentioned that SunRisers Hyderabad has picked a good squad this year and they might have some great things in store in the upcoming 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League. He said:
“I feel they picked a good team at the IPL auction as well, keeping the future in mind. So, I think they will start getting results very soon. So, well done. Looking forward to that,”
