Ravi Shastri Got Trolled After He Gave A Unique Suggestion To Save Test Cricket: Star England all-rounder Ben Stokes’ decision to quit ODI cricket at the age of 31 has got the cricket fraternity talking about the immense workload of all-format players.
He said that it had become “unsustainable for me now” to play all three formats with his highest intensity. In fact, even in his last ODI, he was seen limping and was clearly not 100 percent fit.
“We are not cars. You can’t just fill us up and we’ll go out there and be ready to be fuelled up again,” Stokes stated ahead of his last ODI match.
Following Stokes’ decision, many experts including Nasser Hussain and Michael Vaughan have expressed concern with the crammed international schedule by the ICC.
Ravi Shastri gave a unique suggestion
Amid this, former India coach Ravi Shastri has warned that the ICC should be a “little careful” while increasing the number of bilateral series – which it has already for the next FTP cycle.
Shastri came up with the suggestion that the bilateral series should be reduced and franchise cricket should be encouraged and expanded. He feels that less bilateral series will put more importance on the T20 World Cups.
“I would be a little careful of the number of bilateral splits, especially in T20 cricket. There’s a lot of franchise cricket which can be encouraged, whichever country it’s in – India, West Indies, or Pakistan,” Shared said on Telegraph’s Sport’s podcast.
“You play less bilateral and then you get together for the World Cups. So the emphasis on ICC World Cup events becomes paramount. Then people look forward to them,” he added.
Recent events in the franchise cricket world have already got eyebrows raised: the IPL is set to expand to a two-and-half month window, and most shockingly, the Cricket South Africa has decided to pull out of their ODI series in January in Australia so that their players are available for the new T20 league they have launched.
Shastri also recommended a two-tier system in Test cricket. “I think two tiers are needed, otherwise Test cricket will die in 10 years time. You need six teams at the top, and then six teams in the second and then you qualify.
“And those top six play against each other more often because of the corridor you open up by having less bilateral T20 cricket and just franchise cricket. That’s the way all formats of the game can survive,”
Fans on social media, though, were not pleased by Shastri’s belief in decreasing bilateral T20I series to expand franchise leagues. They trolled the commentator for looking for a bigger paycheck in franchise cricket.
