S Sreesanth, throughout his career, came across as one of the most aggressive cricketers to have played the game for India. However, Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa believes that only former Indian skipper MS Dhoni was able to handle Sreesanth.
Well, for the unversed, MS Dhoni, S. Sreesanth, and Robin Uthappa, all three were a part of the Indian team in 2007 and were a part of the squad that won the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa. Following the world cup triumph, team India hosted Australia for a T20 match in Hyderabad.
Recently, during an interaction with stand-up comedian Sorabh Pant on his YouTube show ‘Wake Up With Sorabh’., Robin Uthappa revealed a hilarious incident that took place during a match from same India vs Australia series of 2007.
Uthappa revealed how MS Dhoni pulled Sreesanth and asked him to focus on his bowling rather than other useless elements. Uthappa revealed:
“It was just after the World Cup, and we were playing Australia in Hyderabad. And I think it was either Andrew Symonds or Hussey who had backed up. And then Sree (Sreesanth) stopped, took the stumps off and goes ‘How is that? How is that?’ So MS came running from there, pulled him and said ‘just go bowl bro’. Someone who actually handled him really well was MS,”
Furthermore, in the interaction, Uthappa recalled an incident from the final of the T20 World Cup. The moment will go down in the folklore of Indian cricket when Misbah-Ul-Haw tried to play an aerial scoop shot off Joginder Sharma however, ended up smashing the ball to a short fine leg, where Sreesanth grabbed the ball and completed the catch. Recalling the iconic incident, Uthappa revealed:
“I was standing at long on. So many things happened during that match. When that ball went in the air, my first thought was ‘ok, who is at short fine leg?’. And when I saw it’s Sree, I started sprinting and I was praying ‘Please pull us through.’ Because again, you don’t lose a World Cup final to Pakistan. There’s just something that we always get the better of them in a World Cup,”
