The incident took place in the 56th over of the opening day’s play, when Nicholls tried to dance down the track and smashed Jack Leach for a four and time the ball to perfection.

However, to his dismay, the ball deflected off non-striker Daryl Mitchell’s bat and lobbed to mid-off, and landed straight in the hands of Alex Lees.

Well within the law

While everyone was wondering whether the form of dismissal was legal or not, the official handle of the Marylebone Cricket Club said that the form of dismissal was unfortunate, but within the laws. The tweet read:

An unfortunate dismissal? Yes. But wholly within the Laws.
Law 33.2.2.3 states it will be out if a fielder catches the ball after it has touched the wicket, an umpire, another fielder, a runner or the other batter.”

On Friday, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar also joined the bandwagon as he came up with an epic response to the viral video. In his Tweet, Sachin Tendulkar hilariously trolled Nicholls in his typical Bambaiyaa style as he explained how in gully cricket, the non-striker would have been declared out. He wrote:

“𝑰𝒏 𝒈𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕, 𝒘𝒆’𝒅 𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒏-𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒌𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒖𝒕 🤪 #CricketTwitter”

After the end of Day 1, bowler Jack Leach was left reflecting on a “silly game” as he expressed that he wasn’t happy with Henry Nicholls’s mode of dismissal. He said:

“I didn’t even know if that was allowed. I don’t actually like the dismissal but I felt like I bowled pretty well to Nicholls leading up to that you just have to take it. It’s a silly game, isn’t it? That’s what it made me think: it’s a stupid game that we play. Never seen anything like it. It was very lucky for me, very unlucky for Nicholls,”
