Shardul Thakur Tells Media Why He Chose Jersey Number 10

Number ’10’ jersey is very to Indian cricket fans because the great Sachin Tendulkar carried it for a very long period of time in his career. In fact, it was his number when he decided to hang his boots and retire from Test cricket.

India’s young fast bowler Shardul Thakur made his One Day International (ODI) debut in the fourth match of the ongoing series against Sri Lanka. Shardul Thakur made a good start to his ODI career. He bowled 7 overs and took 1 wicket for just 26 runs.

He bowled well in his first spell but the biggest talking point was his jersey number i.e. jersey number ’10’. Shardul is regarded as one of the best young fast bowlers in India. He has been performing well at the domestic level and also in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Coming back to jersey number 10, since Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement, Shardul Thakur is the first Indian cricketer to wear number 10 on his back. Indian cricket fans on Twitter questioned BCCI’s decision to give the iconic number 10 to a youngster.

Indian cricket fans are very emotional about the game and their superstars and this is the reason why Twitteratis created a big storm on social media after Shardul Thakur was seen with number 10 on his back.

Why did Shardul Thakur wear number 10 on his back?

In an interview after the match, Shardul Thakur revealed that he chose number 10 because  it’s the total of his birth date and he believes in numerology.

“10 is the total of my birth date. This is why I chose number 10,” Shardul Thakur said.

OUR VIEW: Indian cricket fans overreacted on Twitter. It is true that Sachin is the greatest Indian cricketer and 10 was his jersey number but this doesn’t mean that fans should target a young fast bowler, who has done well at the domestic level, for wearing number 10 on his back.
