Legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar feels that Rohit Sharma’s appointment as Team India’s new Test captain is no surprise as he is one of the few players who are surely going to play in all the formats for the country.

The position of the Indian Test captaincy was vacant ever since Virat Kohli stepped down from his role following the Test series defeat in South Africa earlier this year.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Rohit Sharma as the new captain of team India in the longest format of the game during the squad announcement for the Sri Lanka series.

In a conversation with Sports Tak, Gavaskar said that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli play all-formats and if the latter is not leading the team, Rohit was the obvious choice for the captaincy. He said:

“The guy who is a certainty in all three formats – when the selection committee sits down and think of who are the certainties, then Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s names will come up. And between them, Kohli is not doing captaincy, so it had to be Rohit Sharma. There was no surprise there.”

Further, Sunil Gavaskar also talked about Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in limited-overs cricket. Talking about it, Gavaskar said that the players seem to have more clarity and they are aware of what the skipper expects from them. Gavaskar said:

The way he has handled the team. The way players are getting clarity. I won’t say there wasn’t clarity earlier. That would be wrong to say as I was not in the dressing room, so I don’t know. But from the way he speaks, it seems like the players know their roles. And they know what the team expects from them and what the captain expects from them, ”

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma’s first assignment as India’s skipper in the longest format of the game will be against Sri Lanka from February 24 to March 16.
